Why does an iGaming license matter?
Without a valid license, an operator cannot legally offer real-money gaming services in most markets. Full stop. The license sets out the exact conditions under which the business must run — the technical standards its platform must meet, the AML and KYC procedures it must follow, the player protections it must implement, and the reports it must file with the regulator.
Licenses are issued for either B2C or B2B operations. A B2C license covers operators offering games directly to players — online casinos, sportsbooks, and similar consumer-facing products. A B2B license covers suppliers providing gaming software or services to other licensed operators. Some jurisdictions also issue combined structures for groups that operate both functions.
The most widely used jurisdictions for iGaming licenses include Curaçao (CGA), Malta (MGA), the United Kingdom (UKGC), Gibraltar, the Isle of Man, and the Netherlands (KSA). Each has a different cost structure, application process, time to license, and ongoing compliance burden.
