CONSIDERABLE GROWTH IN THE DUTCH ONLINE GAMBLING MARKET ACCORDING TO KANSSPELAUTORITEIT

According to the 2022 edition of the monitoring report published by the Dutch regulator and gambling authority, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), the regulated Dutch online gambling market is growing.

KSA estimates an annual growth of 13-15 percent per year among online gambling operators, as per the report. This indicates promising signs for online gambling companies and those operating online games of chance or online casinos.

The report emphasises that there has been growth specifically in the regulated gambling market. Approximately 92% of all players play at a legal online casino, while 98% of newly registered players play with licensed online casinos.

Highlights of the report

The report highlights several important data points which can be viewed as signs of a market with great potential but also with added attention to regulation.

  • In January 2022 the GGR was EUR 90 million, whereas January 2023 showed a GGR of EUR 124 million.
  • The number of active player accounts increased from 563.000 to 859.000 from July 2022 to January 2023, an increase of 53% in just six months.
  • Out of the active player accounts, 365.000 players play monthly which means that not every player with an active account plays every month.
  • Young adult players, with an average of 183.000 accounts and 2.6 accounts per player, play more than older ones.
  • The amount of money lost averaged € 153 per account in July 2022 but from August 2022 to January 2023, this reduced to € 143 per account.
  • The KSA introduced an updated version of the Centraal Register Uitsluiting Kansspelen (CRUKS) which manages gambling stops and saw nearly 40.000 people registering for a stop.
  • There are stricter conditions for advertising with a ban on untargeted ads on radio, television and billboards in the public domain.

NEED FOR A SAFE ENVIRONMENT

René Jansen, chair of the KSA, calls for a more organized duty of care among the online gambling operators based on the outcome of the report. He indicates that the growth of the market was foreseen and calls for the attention of all involved to create a safe online environment while adhering to Dutch gambling laws.

Today, The Netherlands is a great example of one of the actively regulated markets where there is opportunity for legal operators to do well.
